Crafty People Series # 1 - Maria Helena Zapata

We have been thinking of doing a series involving crafty/creative people for quite some time. Basically we are just curious about certain things, hence the questionnaire, but mostly we wanted to see the environment in which they work. We are going to explore this, and see where it takes us.
The first in the series couldn't be other than our mom. Our constant source of inspiration. We are in awe of her creativity, and of all the wonderful things she makes with her little hands (she has really small hands!!). Here she is!
...

1. First crafty memory?
I remember at 6 years old doing crochet chain stitches. Nobody taught me!

2. Favorite thing you've ever made until now?
I felt an immense pleasure making the altars (see picture above). Embroidering is what I enjoy the most.

3. Favorite material to work with?
It depends on what I'm working on, if I'm making necklaces I like working with linen, if I'm em-
broidering I use cotton with metallic threads.

4. Inspiring words you go back to or think often?
I repeat to myself constantly, I'm capable, I can do it!! Since I'm mostly self taught I always think
    of these words.

5. Favorite color?
I like the indigo color of japanese fabrics, or the color of gauze how it changes where ever you
    place it.

6. Where do you find your inspiration?
Mostly in the afternoon, the colors, the way things move (leaves, wind, birds). I enjoy looking at
     things when they are moving.

7. What do you collect?
All sorts of fabrics. Little pieces, big pieces, new and old. Lace, doilies, handkerchiefs.

8. Tea or coffee?
    Coffee, 100% Colombian coffee!!

9. Mountains or beach?
The sounds of the mountains are forever in my memory, and since there are no mountains here
I enjoy greatly walking on the beach in the morning.

10. What would you like to craft or do in craft terms that you haven't done yet?
Nothing really. I would like to be constantly inspired. I would like to be able to do many things
at the same time. Most of the times we are just reinventing. I would like that whatever it is that
I reinvent would be perceived as new by people. And one of my dreams is to learn to use a
      spinning wheel.

...

Nadie me enseño!

Enjoy,
Giova & Gianni
