Lately I've been reading the marvelous book
The Sweet Life in Paris by
David Lebovitz, and one of the chapters is about hot chocolate. When he mentioned the one he liked best I had to go and try it for myself as I'm always very curious about these things. I've walked by this place many times on my trips to Paris, but only ventured in last weekend. After leaving with a gloomy face and quite disappointed, my son (who loves hot chocolate) asked me why we went in there in the first place. I explained to him about the book and that we always need to try new things regardless of the outcome. Now I know I didn't like that chocolate, but I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there that I still haven't tried.
This made me think, which is the best hot chocolate out there??
The truth is there are so many - and I'm in no way an expert-. I think the best hot chocolate is the one you think is the best. As with many things in life, it is just a matter of taste.

Cacao Sampaka in Barcelona. If you ask me, this is the best hot chocolate I've tried so far! |
|
Granja La Pallaresa in Barcelona has great hot chocolate with churros, but a bit too sweet for me. |
|
Patisserie Viennoise in Paris. This is the one Lebovitz likes. For me it was too watery. He does warn you on the book about the excessive amount of whipped cream they add though! |
|
The world famous Laduree! It was way too sweet for my taste, but delicious nonetheless. |

And this is how we make chocolate in Colombia, it is the one we grew up with. In almost every house you will find this brand and this funny looking equipment! And we have it with our beloved arepas for breakfast or mid afternoon, or whenever we feel like it, which is almost always!
So which is the best chocolate you've ever had?? I would love your recommendations, because if I have the chance I will go on check it out.
Have a sweet wednesday!

Uuffff delicious!!! My favorite is the one from Jaques Torres; I think the taste is perfectly balanced- not too sweet, its rich and spicy and not too thick but thick enough! And of course the hot chocolate in Colombia with fresh cheese is very good!
ReplyDeleteI think I went with Esther to Jaques Torres once but didn't try their hot chocolate! Will do next time!
DeleteAHHHHHHHHH ESO SI ES UNA VERDERA DELICIA. CADA UNO MEJOR QUE OTRO. PERO EN MI MEMORIA, ESTA EL ULTIMO. EL AROMA, EL COLOR EL SABOR MMMM..... DELICIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSi ese ultimo con quesito y arepita!! Ufffff!
DeleteTwo of the BEST hot chocolates I have had in my life were in Budapest this past summer. One was served in a sort of square chocolate lolly pop that you put in the hot milk and keep turning it until it dissolves. Great taste, not too sweet and super rich. The other one was in Cafe Gerbeaud, one of Budapest's gems and that was like getting a shot of thick chocolate expresso. Wow! Finally, my latest Brooklyn discovery: the dark hot chocolate of the Chocolate Room, it blows my mind and I constantly crave it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing, I will check out the Chocolate room when I'm there in January! As for Budapest, I hope one day I'll be able to see this beautiful city, and I'll make sure to stop by Cafe Gerbeaud!
DeleteHave you ever had hot chocolate in Italy? It's almost as thick as chocolate pudding and so so rich (your spoon can stand up in it). I personally prefer the North American style hot chocolate. And like you I like it not too sweet. Oh now I'm really craving some! I'll have to give it a try in Belgium and see how it is.
ReplyDeleteI can't really remember of having hot chocolate in Italy. I think when I go there it is all about gelato! Do let me know about the hot chocolate in Belgium, I'm very curious!
DeleteThe best hot chocolate I've ever had was after a cold day at the beach almost 15 years ago when I first met my husband. I'm not sure what made it the best chocolate milk ever: the hint of vodka or because we were so much in love... (probably both!)
ReplyDeleteI bet it was the love part! It always makes everything so much better!
