I Love to Read Letters in Books

I  love to read letters in books, just as much as I like writing letters. I guess other people's letters are fascinating to me and that is why I've been wanting to share these with you.  I feel a bit strange when recommending or sharing products here on the blog (I usually don't), but  I guess I'll have to take my chances.

If you like reading letters (like me) maybe you'll love reading some of these. If reading is not your thing maybe watch the movie?

The Guernesey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was recommend on Instagram by Dottie Angel. This is one of those books you'll read in one day. I loved it. It was such an easy and endearing story to read.

After reading the one above, I went looking for other books written in the "letter" format, and found 84 Charing Cross Road.  I fell in love with Helene Hanff. What a strong woman, and the relationship she had with a bookseller in London was simply amazing. I gave Jane Austen a second chance because of her and I'm so grateful I did!!

Here and Now are letters between writers Paul Auster and J.M. Coetzee. These two writers amaze me. One a bit more than the other (but I won't tell you which). I just finished this book (it was a Christmas present), and I can't recommend it enough. It was a delight to read from beginning to end.

Letters of Note compiled by Shaun Usher, on the other hand is a beautiful book that contains all sorts of letters, from famous and not so famous people. It is not a book to be read in a sitting or for that matter in 2. Best to be read slowly and to admire each letter. Beautiful! I can't believe I got this one as a Christmas present (it is a bit expensive), but in my opinion worth it!

Mary and Max is a movie about two pen pals. It will make you laugh and cry and sometimes both at the same time. This was recommend by a dear pen pal, and I'm so happy I could get my hands on it!! What an amazing movie it is, seriously, money back guaranteed!

Do you have any recommendations for me??? I would love to know if you have any favorites.

Have a wonderful day.
Lots of love,
Giova

  1. Have you read Griffin & Sabine by Nick Bantock? If not, I need to lend it to you! It's a (kind of mysterious and mystical) love story between two artists, told entirely in letters. As in you need to open envelopes and unfold (gorgeous) stationery to read it. Tala's second name is from this book.

    1. I have read it, and loved it when it came out. I lost my copy in one of my many house moves. I remember it as a trilogy, but maybe I'm wrong?

  3. Oh and I also have Letters from Leaders—an assortment of presidents, kings, prime ministers, CEOs, the Dalai Lama, etc. A bit more serious than Letters of Note but still a good read.

  4. I loved Mary & Max! I think it was one of the movies I saw at our local art house cinema when I was waiting for my boy to finally arrive, just over three years ago (he was 8 days late!) One of my favourite movies about writing letters is "Shop Around the Corner", which is what "You've Got Mail" was based on. I prefer the original though, with the letter writing instead of emails :)
